Drinking beer in Dordrecht
Dordrecht is a city where you easily stay longer than you meant to. A walk through the old centre, something to eat somewhere, and then one more beer. Or the other way round.
For beer lovers there is plenty to find along the way. From familiar Belgian classics to modern craft beers you may never have seen before. Beer has been at the centre of De Tijd since 1988. The list keeps changing, so even if you come often, there is regularly something new on the table.
You don't have to know exactly what you want to drink, by the way. That helps.
Beer at De Tijd
Craft beer in Dordrecht
A good craft beer pub doesn't just have a lot of beer. It has something to choose from.
At De Tijd fourteen beers on tap change regularly, and there is a big selection in bottles and cans. The range runs from blonde and tripel to IPA, stout, gueuze, saison and everything that has ended up in between.
Sometimes you walk in for a beer you have known for years. Sometimes you just point at something because the label looks interesting. Both are good ways to start an evening.
Beer styles as a handy guide
The beer world has become so big that it is easy to lose track. Luckily you don't have to.
Maybe you like bitter and hoppy. Maybe dark, malty and strong. Or you want something fresh for the terrace. Beer styles give you something to hold on to, but within every style there is still plenty of room for difference.
In our beer encyclopedia we say more about the different styles, their history and roughly what to expect in your glass, from pilsner and blonde to lambic, porter and barley wine.
Tasting
Beer tasting in Dordrecht
Sometimes choosing is the problem.
At a beer tasting you try several beers side by side and learn a bit more about the style, the brewery and the story behind the beer. Our tap tasting is four different beers from the rotating taps. There are also tastings around a theme, such as Trappist beers.
It doesn't all have to be so serious. The best moment is usually when someone says: I would never have picked that myself, but I actually quite like it.
And while you're tasting, you can of course order something to go with it. Our snack menu is full of things that go well with a good glass of beer.
A beer route through Dordrecht
Drinking beer is a good way to get to know a city. It works the other way round, too.
Dordrecht has a compact historic centre with old streets, harbours, almshouse courtyards and plenty of places to sit down along the way. That is why we made our own beer route. You walk through the city, find a few special places and decide for yourself where to stay a bit longer.
The route is not a race. The beer doesn't get any better for it anyway.
Beer and the city
Beer has been part of Dordrecht for a very long time.
For centuries the city was an important trading town, and beer was an everyday part of life. Breweries, inns and trade were closely tied to the city and its waterways. The beer of those days looks nothing like what ends up in a glass now, of course, but the idea has stayed the same: beer goes with being together.
Dordrecht's big brewing history is behind us now. The love of beer hasn't gone away.
De Tijd has been here since 1988. In that time the beer world has changed a lot. Craft beer used to be mostly about Belgian classics. Now interesting beers come from all over the world and old styles are being rediscovered.
That makes it fun to keep up with.
Discovering beer without hurry
Not every visit to a beer pub has to be a tasting.
You can walk in for one glass, have a coffee, order a pizza or put a board game on the table with friends. Maybe you stay an hour. Maybe a bit longer.
At De Tijd we think that is quite a nice idea.
A good beer doesn't have to be the centre of the evening. Sometimes it is just the glass on the table while the conversation carries on.
More about beer
Once you start looking around, you find there is quite a lot behind a glass of beer. Malt, hops, yeast, temperature, maturing and the way a beer is brewed all affect what you taste.
Our beer encyclopedia goes into that. You'll find explanations of beer styles, ingredients, history and the stories behind the beer.
Not to turn every glass into tasting notes.
But sometimes it is fun to know why something tastes the way it does.
